Reflection for January 2003

The month of January, the month of new resolve and new beginnings, is signaled by "Janus-the two headed god", one head facing the past, and one head facing the present and future. Poet Robinson Jeffers honored this Janus capacity within Human nature when he wrote: " Lend me the stone strength of the past, and I will lend you the wings of the future, for I have them." What are the solid, wise, and genuine experiences of the past that are calling to be brought forward into this new year? What are the winged dreams, hopes, and inspirations, that are longing to be manifested into 2003?

" I pledged myself awhile ago not to seek refuge, neither in death nor in a walled garden.
In lies, nor gated loyalties, nor in the gates
of contempt, that easily lock the
world out of doors."

--Robinson Jeffers
