Alleviate Suffering

Recall the face of the poorest
and most helpless man whom you may have seen
and ask yourself if the step you contemplate
is going to be of any use to him.

Will it restore him to a control
over his own life and destiny?
Will it lead to self rule for the hungry
and spiritually starved millions
of our fellow men?

If so, then you will find your doubts and yourself
melting away.

Practices

1. During the month of March reflect daily on Gandhi's quote as you enter into each day.
2. Becoming aware of the suffering in the world, motivates us to cultivate a deeper sense of compassionate action. Once a week, see where you are motivated to take compassionate action to alleviate poverty, and an action that will fulfill or nourish you spiritually.
3. Be sure to extend compassion towards yourself and others every day.
