Reflection for February
2003
Spiritual traditions all voice that love is stronger than fear. Perhaps our greatest practice for us now is to express the spoken and unspoken verse of love between us, our circle of influence, at work and for all living peoples, creatures and plants.
"I love roses, but Medgar could never afford to buy me a florists bouquet. So he did something better: Every year he made a ritual of giving me bare-root roses to plant in our yard, and eventually, three dozen rosebushes were the envy of our neighbors. Once in awhile, Medgar would gather a bouquet, or perhaps just one rose, and hand it to me as he came through the door. It became an unspoken verse of the love between us."
--Myrlie Evers about her late husband,
Medgar Evers- heroic civil rights leader
"When you first face the mystery which is at the heart's core and in the mind's essence, you know nothing about it other than it is the source of your being and that it possesses a power and intelligence utterly transcending your own. Yet you feel that it draws your love and in your best moments, inspires your character."
